The MGG/MBG professional group is where program directors from medical genetics and medical biochemical genetics training programs meet to review and create best practices.
The group interacts with ACGME, ABMGG, and ERAS to ensure trainees have access to high quality programs across the country. This group also serves as a content resource for new and continuing program directors as the field of genetics and medical education evolve.

Program Application & Certification
PROGRAM APPLICATION PROCESS
- Set up a meeting with your Local GME (Graduate Medical Education) DIO (Designated Institutional Officer) to learn about your institution’s supports and policies for staring a training program.
- START HERE for support & resources (ACGME)
- Check for when the ACGME Review Committee meets for your application
- Ensure your faculties are up-to-date on their ABMGG Certification
FINDING YOUR APPLICANT
- AAMC Resident and Program Survey . Information for potential applicants (Spring/early summer)
- AAMC Program Director's WorkStation (PDWS) for training programs to receive and review the applications and supporting documents. This is where applicant files are available for program review (use during application cycle)
RANKING APPLICANTS
- The NRMP is where the trainee and program rank their preferences and matching occurs.
- NRMP also has a match calendar (be sure to choose your match type) that can be helpful
CONGRATS! YOU HAVE A TRAINEE!
- Register new trainees in summer (ABMGG)
- Use Logbooks frequently. Trainees must enter cases both at ACGME and ABMGG
- ABMGG In-Service Training Exam . Register early winter; take in late winter. Results come through NBME.
- Monitor milestones to track trainee progress across the lifespan (ACGME)
- GME Requirements. Likely you will have systems from the GME office regarding tracking trainees, which will include program evaluation committee meetings (at least once per year) and clinical competence committee meetings (at least twice per year)
- Complete ACGME Faculty / Resident surveys . These are NECESSARY to do to avoid a citation from ACGME!
- ABMGG Verification of Training (March 1) is required to sit for boards. Note: Updates every 2 years
