18th Annual APHMG Meeting at Miramonte Resort, Indian Wells, CA

The Association of Professors of Human and Medical Genetics (APHMG) held its annual meeting at the Miramonte Resort, Indian Wells, CA, May 2-4, 2012, with an excellent attendance and a diverse group of participants. The meeting focused on the further development of Special Interest Groups, with the first day being devoted to two SIG programs Residency Program Directors and Genetic Course Directors. A portion of Friday was dedicated to the Clinical Laboratory Training Program SIG and the Graduate Program Directors/Education SIG.

The Program Directors discussion included in-service exams and the residency matching program, as well as reports from the Residency Review Committee (RRC) and American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Breakout sessions focused on understanding learning styles, developing resident supervision and shared web-based educational resources. Gerald Feldman of Wayne State University, discussed recruitment of Training in Medical Genetics; Laura Edgar of ACGME and Bruce Korf of University of Alabama, presented the ACGME Milestone Project. The guest speaker, Nancy Tofil from University of Alabama talked about Simulation as it relates to Genetics Education. All session were well received by the attendees.

During the Course Directors meeting there were updates from Helga Toriello about the Q-bank; Ed McKee on the next ABCD meeting; and Shoumita Dasgupta on the Medical Genetic Education Survey. The group had wonderful presentations from Shoumita Dasgupta and Kathy Hyland on using ARS for teaching and Ed McKee on Active Learning: Interactive session on TBL. In the afternoon, the group worked in smaller groups to rewrite the genetic core competencies. Later in the day, the Course Directors attended the poster session and listened to the 6 poster authors present their work. The posters were up for the remainder of the meeting for all attendees to view and ask questions.

In the plenary session, Dr. Bruce Korf from University of Alabama, along with other leaders in academic medicine, shared their experiences and involvement in the growth and evolution of genetics departments, centers and institutes. There was an interactive workshop by Dr. Jason Frank from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada on competency-based medical education and its potential impact on the education of students, residents and fellows. On the second day, Dr. John Mahoney, Associate Dean of Medical Education at University of Pittsburgh discussed generational differences between current learners and teachers. The fourth workshop of the meeting, facilitated by Dr. Reed Sutton from Baylor, focused on the role of medical geneticists in the interpretation of genome data.

The APHMG meeting included both significant presentations, and provided ample opportunity for extremely useful discussion and sharing of programs and models that are working in a variety of universities. At this very interactive meeting, problems, and challenges may be addressed directly, as well as joint exploration and discussion of possible solutions.
