The Association of Professors of Human and Medical Genetics (APHMG) held its largest meeting ever in Napa, California, April 14-17, 2010. The meeting focused on the development of Special Interest Groups, with the first organized group being the Residency Program Directors. Issues discussed included logbook development, in-service exams, the residency matching program and reports from the Residency Review Committee (RRC) and American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Breakout sessions also focused on Medical School Course Directors issues (e.g., competencies and question bank) and Laboratory Program Directors (e.g., rotation curricula). The sharing of reports from the groups promoted active and useful discussion.

In the plenary session, Dr. George Richard of AAMC reviewed the AAMC’s Careers in Medicine Program and shared information about recruiting students to medical genetics residencies. The scientific program brought Drs. Eric Courchesne and Stephen Scherer to speak about functional abnormalities and CNV’s in autism. The final talk on Maintenance of Certification included a talk by Dr. Clarence Braddock of the American Board of Internal Medicine, with discussion following that demonstrated similar challenges from the largest board to our much smaller Board in Medical Genetics.

The APHMG meeting included both significant presentations, and provided ample opportunity for extremely useful discussion and sharing of programs and models that are working in a variety of universities. The group departed looking forward to even greater participation next year. All are encouraged to visit the APHMG Web site and the information available at www.aphmg.org.
